ARE THE DYNAMICS OF KNOWLEDGE-BASED INDUSTRIES ANY DIFFERENT?
The concept of «knowledge-based industries» (KBIs) has been widely used both in the academy and in policy-making over the last decade, due to the increasing role those industries play – both in terms of value added and employment – in contemporary, advanced economies. In this paper we discuss the extent to which KBIs differ from other industries in what concerns some of the stylised facts and regularities of industry dynamics usually found in the literature. In particular, we analyse the patterns and the determinants of firm entry and post-entry performance (measured in terms of survival of new firms), comparing KBIs groups with the remaining industries, using data for the Portuguese economy in the second half of the 1990s. We find that KBIs and the firms within them show some signs of distinctiveness in their dynamics as compared to the general case. In particular, on average, KBIs firms have higher survival chances, and entry within the KBIs groups is less responsive to incentives.knowledge-based industries; market entry; firm survival
verificadas in situ de forma a permitir conhecer o verdadeiro desempenho destas construções e assim avaliar quais
The vernacular architecture is recognized by the intrinsic ability to articulate and solve, with an intelligent reading
of the context, the constraints imposed by the permanence and survival of man in a certain place.
Among the variants recognized in different regions of Portugal and the world, all of them seek to create conditions
of permanence to social, economic and cultural development, but because these buildings were developed in harmony
with the contexts in which they operate, they present themselves different from each other, with similar solutions solely
between places where climatic, geographical, cultural or environmental constraints are identical.
The new challenges for architecture dictate the demand for solutions more integrated and aware about the
consumption of resources, which provide a more balanced and sustainable future.
In this sense this paper proposes the validation and reinterpretation of some of the pragmatic knowledge
of adaptation found in these architecture, developed and refined over generations, in contexts of resource scarcity.
Recognition and validation of these solutions can decrease pejorative connotations that relate to underdevelopment the
vernacular buildings and modes of inhabiting, demonstrating the contemporary potential of these strategies.
This research focuses on Casa de Lavoura do Minho (Minho’s Farmhouse), characterized by a strong connection
to land cultivation and the ability to be self-sufficient in the past for the production of food and energy and water supply.
Some examples of this type of constructions are presented and systematic qualitative characteristics already recognized
by previous research. Some of the most representative building solutions were then evaluated in situ to allow to know
the true performance of these constructs and thus assess which of these have the potential to be reinterpreted in the
development of more integrated and sustainable solutions for the future.
Quantitative evaluations demonstrate that some of the solutions and construction methods recognized in
vernacular architecture enable you to develop solutions that integrate all dimensions of sustainability, being still a
valuable contribution to the development of new buildings and rehabilitation interventions.
Recognize the validity or weakness of solutions enables the design to process features of Casa de Lavoura do
Minho (Minho’s Farmhouse) from the standpoint of development and innovation for future use. Thus, the project is
based on qualitative and quantitative vernacular knowledge recognized, allowing the creation of a network of connections
and relationships that seek complementarity between the parties and allowing the project to be a reinterpretation of the
Casa de Lavoura do Minho (Minho’s Farmhouse), maintaining self-sufficiency through the development of vernacular
solutions and also the inclusion of new knowledge and technologies
Coping with the reality: adding crucial features to a typestate-oriented language
Detecting programming errors and vulnerabilities in software is increasingly important,
and building tools that help with this task is an area of investigation, crucial for the
industry these days. When programming in an object-oriented language, one naturally
defines stateful objects that are non-uniform, i.e., their methods’ availability depends
on their internal state. One might represent their intended usage protocol with an automaton
or a state machine. Behavioral types allow to statically check if all the code of a
program respects the usage protocol of each object.
In this thesis we present a tool that extends Java with typestate definitions. These
typestates are associated with Java classes and define the behavior of instances of those
classes, specifying the sequences of method calls allowed. This tool checks statically that
method calls happen in order, following the specified behavior.
The tool was implemented in Kotlin as a plugin for the Checker Framework. It is a
new implementation of the Mungo tool and supports prevention of null pointer errors,
state transitions depending on return values, assurance of protocol completion, droppable
states, and association of protocols with classes from the standard Java library or
from third-party libraries. Additionally, the tool integrates behavioral types with access
permissions, allowing objects to be shared in a controlled way using a language of
assertions. This language of assertions supports concepts like packing and unpacking,
including unpacking of aliases objects, and transferring of permissions between aliases.
To relieve the programmer from manually writing all the necessary assertions, the tool
implements an inference algorithm which analyzes the code statically and, given the uses
of objects, constructs all the required assertions.
Thalidomide surveillance and pharmacovigilance in Brazil – an overview
Introduction:The thalidomide is probably the best-known teratogenic drug and still results in cases of severe physical deformities in children born in Brazil. Objective: To present the overall context of surveillance and pharmacovigilance of thalidomide in Brazil. Method: This article presents a narrative review of current literature concerning thalidomide regulation, policies, and pharmacovigilance in Brazil. Results: New cases of congenital abnormalities whose phenotype is compatible with thalidomide embryopathy were identified in the last ten years, while the approval of thalidomide for new indications was recently updated. The mechanisms of diagnosing thalidomide embryopathy are complex, remaining the challenge in distinguishing this condition from other congenital abnormalities. The increasing number of thalidomide users in Brazil is correlated with the occurrence of embryopathy and the real extension of the rationality of its use is largely unknown. Additionally, our pharmacovigilance and surveillance systems are predominantly based on voluntary reports, issues that remains over the years. Conclusions: The policies have improved over the years to prevent the fetus from being exposed to thalidomide, and current regulation establishes rules for controlling its distribution, prescription, dispensation, and use. Brazilian surveillance system is manual and pharmacovigilance is supported by voluntary reports. The failure of the system to properly control the thalidomide use and its effects might lead to serious consequences to the community; therefore, this subject deserves constant attention.Título PT: Vigilância e farmacovigilância da talidomida no Brasil - uma visão geral
Exploration and Analysis of Combinations of Hamming Codes in 32-bit Memories
Reducing the threshold voltage of electronic devices increases their
sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation dramatically, increasing the
probability of changing the memory cells' content. Designers mitigate failures
using techniques such as Error Correction Codes (ECCs) to maintain information
integrity. Although there are several studies of ECC usage in spatial
application memories, there is still no consensus in choosing the type of ECC
as well as its organization in memory. This work analyzes some configurations
of the Hamming codes applied to 32-bit memories in order to use these memories
in spatial applications. This work proposes the use of three types of Hamming
codes: Ham(31,26), Ham(15,11), and Ham(7,4), as well as combinations of these
codes. We employed 36 error patterns, ranging from one to four bit-flips, to
analyze these codes. The experimental results show that the Ham(31,26)
configuration, containing five bits of redundancy, obtained the highest rate of
simple error correction, almost 97\%, with double, triple, and quadruple error
correction rates being 78.7\%, 63.4\%, and 31.4\%, respectively. While an ECC
configuration encompassed four Ham(7.4), which uses twelve bits of redundancy,
only fixes 87.5\% of simple errors
